Pink Diamond Bride Guest Blog: When I Said Yes To The Dress

I was extremely worried about trying on wedding dresses. As a plus-sized bride with an even more plus sized bust, I am very used to clothes not fitting. And you always hear about bridal sizes running much smaller than the sizing that you’re used to. I was terrified that trying on wedding dresses would not be a happy experience. I was pretty sure I would end the day in tears like a few other horrible shopping experiences I’d had over the years.

I went home to Grand Junction to celebrate my mom’s 50th birthday about a month after Jacob and I got engaged. Since my mom, sister, and aunt would all be there, we decided to set up a few appointments at some dress shops. I though these would be the first of many time I tried on dresses.

At the first shop, after getting strapped into some undergarments, I held my breath as I slipped on the first dress. As I turned around to look in the mirror, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t really like the details on the dress, but it actually looked good on me! My entourage agreed. With a sigh of relief, I realized that this experience might not be as bad as I was expecting. I relaxed and was able to enjoy myself. I realized it didn’t matter if the dresses wouldn’t zip up the last few inches because, guess what, I was going to order the dress in a size that would fit and then could have alterations done. Much better than trying to buy directly off the rack like in normal life!

I tried on about eight dresses before deciding that I liked a-line or ball gown silhouettes with tulle. When I tried on the first one of that style and put on a veil, my mom cried and I knew I was on the right track. From then it was just a matter of trying on a few more of that style to get just the right combination of details. In total I tried on about 20 dresses at two shops before finding just the right dress at our second trip to the first store.

Maybe my extremely low expectations made the experience all that much better. There were a few tears, but they were happy tears shed by me and my mom as I purchased my wedding dress in my hometown on the same day as her milestone birthday.
